Happy Eid Mubarak
Nowdays, Eid cakes in anyone’s house are neraly always the same, i.e. “snow princess” and the similar. And certainly the cakes were ordered (bought) from somewhere (online of offline shops). It has become very rare people making their own Eid cakes, as did by people in previous times. Consequently, it is often the cakes are left until several weeks after Eid, even until the expiry date come, the cake is still full in its place. It is because people are bored with the same cakes, both served at home and at the relative’s or the neighbor’s house.
After Eid 2014 was finished, I accidentally rolled an empty cake container. The container is made of transparent cylindrical plastic. The cylinder is easily rolled when empty. But if the cylinder is filled with rice (not full) it then hardly rolled. This means there is something interesting here. I then developed equations based only on basic physics to explain the phenomenon. Students were asked to do a number of experiments. The experiment results and theory predictions are very consistent. We obtained so many other results and some are very interesting.
We then published those findings in Powder Technology with the title: “, The dynamics of a cylinder containing granules rolling down an inclined plane.” Simple things around us can be interesting research topics. Are there any application of this research? We will discuss the possible application next.
