Digging Sand Tunnel: It is Dangerous
Playing sand on the beach is very pleasant. One of the interesting attractions is making a sand castle. If we use dry sand, the palace we can make is not too tall. We can make tall palace when using rather wet sand. If the sand is too wet, the height of the palace we can make return to decrease. if the sand is over wet, the palace will collapse.
Another interesting attraction is making sand tunnels. We dig tunnels in the sand and sometimes we go inside. But, indeed this is a very dangerous attraction. The sand tunnels are very unstable and very easy to collapse. There have been many incidents where people were buried in the sand tunnel they dug up. The following videoa are an examples of such events.
From these accidents, it gave rise to question: is there any stability criteria for sand tunnel? The answer to this question, we have published in Granullar Matter with the title: “Stability of Granular Tunnel”.
